What To Wear?

Arrggghhh. I've got an engagement party to attend on the weekend and the dress code is cocktail attire. Help! I'm a not very dressy, not very girly, nearly 40 year old Mum. I do jeans, t-shirt, 3/4 casual pants... all very casual and all very suited to my casual lifestyle. I'm going to be surrounded by 20-somethings who, from the pics I've seen on facebook, are gorgeous, slim and used to dressing up.

Any suggestions for what I should be looking for? I'm not comfortable in dresses so I'm thinking more along the lines of black pants and a sparkly-type top. At least then I can pretend it's jeans and a shirt, so long as I don't look at myself in a mirror.

Uugh, I know how you feel. We've been going to a few weddings lately for people ten years younger than us. My advice is to find a skirt or a top in a fantastic fabric and wear it with something plain (ie black) and some great shoes and a cute little bag. Dress for your body shape and try not to worry about all the young things! ;-)

Is it so much what to wear... or what to say? ;-)
Geez, they´re in their first jobs or at Uni, what will you talk about?

On the other hand... we´re as old as we feel, huh? And that´s not old! No-no! :-)
So: Have fun and go for pants :-)

Are you a skirt wearer? Pants and a sparkly top sound fine to me and I'm sure you'll polish up just fine, no matter what you wear! ;-) (As long as it suits your body shape!)

Definitely wear something that you feel comfortable in. I'm sure if you hit a nice store, something will jump out at you. Maybe keep the outfit simple but add some nice jewelry and accessories.

Duck your head in and let all the 20 something young uns know that the NOVA car has rocked up outside and that Nathan and Nat want tips on how to dress up for engagement parties!

Run quickly inside and lock the door!

I s'pose you'd best let the engage-ees in on it... I mean you're meant to be celebrating with them or something! ;-)

Not that I'd actively encourage such overt trickery mind - hahaha

Definitely some sparkle on the top! It's all about the bling! (and heels, don't forget heels!) I wouldn't worry about trying to keep up with the 20 somethings...they will be wearing short, tight skirts or dresses and you will spend most of the night thinking, "my dughter will never wear that!". Have fun! Kaz x

Thanks for the advice Trish, as usual you're talking good sense!
Uh huh - I guess that's part of it too, Iris. At least it's family so I'll know some people (even if I am related to them LOL) to talk to.
Thanks Melody!
Thanks Paula, you're right. It took several stores but once I found it...
Hmmm... I like the way you think Ron ;)
Got the heels Kaz! And I already think that about so many 'girls' I see. I know it's only going to get worse as she gets older!!
